This morning I learned that a red-tailed hawk is not the same as a red-shouldered hawk. I hope I’ve correctly ID’d accordingly in previous posts.

There was a grey squirrel down below scurrying about. The hawk was laser focused on it’s every move.

This was really a large bird and he was perched on a low branch. It was fun to find him there. Unusual definitely. Thank you Ashley!

In previous years I would have been out tracking our Red Kite and Buzzard populations although I still record any sightings of these raptors. Also Barn Owls! All voluntary work. Being retired from work allows one to follow many paths! 😊

Retirement sounds like the good life Ashley! I’m sure you’ve earned it. Barn Owls! I hope to photograph a barn owl some day!

Great color on this bird.
Depending on where in the country you find a Red-shouldered is just how ‘red’ they actually are.
Very Red in the swamps of South Carolina, not so much in the Florida Everglades. Looks like they are red where you live too.

I didn’t know this Ted. Thank you for sharing that. I love the patterns on these and the patterns on red tails too. Amazing birds. Always a thrill to encounter them.

You didn’t tell us the ending, Sandra. Did the hawk get the squirrel? It is such a brilliant red. Nice photo. Have a nice rest of your day.

Thank you Chris! I snapped a twig with my shoe as I was trying to creep up for a closer shot. Startled the bird and it flew away before it could grab a bite to eat. I hope you had a great day!

Oh well. I’m sure it got lunch elsewhere.
